Self-Defense Workshop


Objective:

To empower individuals with the knowledge and skills to protect themselves from physical harm in potentially dangerous situations. The initiative also aligns with SDG 5: Gender Equality, by fostering women’s empowerment and reducing gender-based vulnerabilities, and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, by promoting physical safety as well as mental resilience.

Outcome:

To equip participants with the ability to recognize potential risks and effectively defend themselves if necessary. Participants gained hands-on training in self-defense techniques, posture correction, and reflex-building exercises. The session also emphasized the importance of mental focus, body coordination, and awareness of surroundings. Students left the workshop more self-aware, resilient, and confident in their ability to safeguard themselves in potentially threatening circumstances.

Shakti Women Development and Social Responsibility cell of SIBM- Hyderabad has organized a Self - defense Workshop for the batch 2025-2027 on the 20th August 2025 at 5:30 PM in the TT room, Sensei Rama Bharath Kumar, a dedicated practitioner of Goju-Ryu Karate since 1975, supported by Sensei Hanuma Prasad and Sensei Ramakrishna conducted an engaging and informative self-defense workshop, aimed at empowering participants with essential skills to protect themselves in various potentially dangerous situations.

The workshop began with an introductory speech that highlighted the importance of self-defence in today’s world and how awareness can often act as the first line of safety. The instructors emphasized that self-defense is not only about physical strength but also about alertness, confidence, and preparedness.

The session included a series of breathing exercises, stretching routines, and posture corrections, which prepared participants for agility and effective movement. Students were reminded that correct posture and balance are critical foundations for self-defense. The trainers also stressed the importance of mind-body coordination, explaining that one’s reactions, movements, and focus must align to respond effectively in high-pressure situations.

Participants were then introduced to quick reflex drills and basic defensive moves, which built their responsiveness and presence of mind. Additionally, eye-body coordination was highlighted as a vital skill in staying alert and aware of potential threats.

Throughout the workshop, breathing exercises were repeated at intervals to reinforce the connection between calmness of mind and effectiveness of action. This rhythm of practice helped students internalize the importance of controlled breathing while preparing the body to react swiftly.

The self-defense workshop directly aligns with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 5: Gender Equality, particularly the target of ensuring women's empowerment and eliminating violence against women in both public and private spheres. By equipping students, especially women, with the skills and confidence to protect themselves, the initiative contributes to creating a safer, more inclusive environment where gender-based vulnerabilities are reduced. Furthermore, the program resonates with SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, as it promotes both physical safety and mental resilience in the face of potential threats. The session concluded with a motivating discussion on confidence, resilience, and the ability to remain composed under stress. Students appreciated the practical nature of the workshop and shared that it not only gave them actionable skills but also improved their self-assurance in handling unpredictable situations. Overall, the self-defense workshop was highly impactful, equipping participants with essential life skills, enhancing their awareness, and fostering a greater sense of empowerment and preparedness among the batch.
